Ford vs. Tesla

Value: The starting MSRP of the Tesla Model Y is $49,990 and the Ford Mach-E $42,895. The Mach-E qualifies for a $7,500 tax credit so, in theory, the Mach-E is more affordable.

Weight: Mach- e 4,394-4,890 Tesla 4,416

Price: Tesla $43,190 Mach-e $42,895 and Mach-E still qualifies for the federal tax credit.

Speed: The Mach-E’s speed matches that of the Tesla Model Y for a fun driving experience. The Mach-E also has a regenerative braking system to recoup energy. The Mach-E will be available in a GT which has the potential to go 0-60 in the mid-3-second range. The Model Y in the Performance model hits 60mph in 3.5 seconds so both are neck and neck.

Technology: Both have over-the-air updates to keep you up to date with the latest technology features. The Mach-E has a huge center touchscreen and digital gauge cluster along with physical buttons to help keep your eyes on the road and not on the screens. The Mach-E also has standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrations, something the Model Y lacks.

Comfort: The Mach-E is more comfortable than the Model Y in my personal opinion. The seats are more breathable with the perforated upholstery. Comfort is an important factor for me since we spend a lot of time these days inside our vehicles. Mach-E. The Mach-E has 19-inch wheels that give it an overall smoother, plusher ride on all surfaces. The back seats fold down in the Mach-E for increased cargo space if needed. Fun fact; the front truck is lined with plastic and has a drain hole so theoretically, it can be used as a cooler. Just throwing that out there.

Range: On paper, the Tesla Model Y has more range, but according to Edmunds’s real-world testing, the Mach-E beat the Model Y. Ford’s Mach-E estimates the range from 211 to 300 miles. On Edmunds’s test, the Mach-E held for an impressive 304 miles. The model Y only managed 263 miles. We usually aren’t driving 200+ miles in a day so we’re comparing apples to oranges, but if you were going on a trip, the Mach-E could travel further between charges.

Color Options: The Tesla Model Y has 5 exterior color options while the Mach-E has 7 exterior colors. I think having an electric vehicle is the time to really spice it up with a punch of color but that is just my opinion. The Infinite Blue Metallic catches eyes and turns head.

Safety: Neither the Mach-E nor the Model Y has been tested by the IIHS or NHTSA for a safety rating. I do know that the Mach-E will come with Ford CoPilot360 and a whole suite of standard safety features we all know and love in Ford’s. The Mach-E has a safer hands-free setup, Active Drive Assist since it only lets you remove both of your hands for 12 seconds before alerting the driver. Usually, at least one hand needs to be on the steering wheel, even if it is just resting. This is to ensure that the driver is ready to take over if need be. Safety features of the Mach-E include forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. It has adaptive cruise control to set the speed and distance between your car and the car in front of you. Lane-keeping keeps the vehicle in the center but you have to have a hand on the wheel at all times to take over at a moment’s notice just in case. When you take your hand off the wheel, it can drive itself for about 12 seconds but then it gives you the notice to place your hand back on the wheel. The Tesla gives you a longer amount of time until it notifies you.

Performance: The Ford Mach-E produced 459-horsepower with 612 lb-ft of torque with the extended-range 98.8kWh pack. There is also a standard range 75.7kWh available as well. With the Tesla Model Y, you are able to switch between AWD, FWD, and RWD when needed. Mach-E has a trip mode. You can see exactly where the energy is going, how you’re driving, etc. Ford has a similar system as Tesla.

Ford is bringing the heat to Tesla and the EV lineup. Overall, Tesla’s Model Y has great interior space, wicked fast Superchargers, and an exhilarating driving performance but the Ford Mach-E is a win in my book. Its exterior design is unique and eye-catching, superior comfort, and easier to use technology. The Mach-E has a more sophisticated charging station, a larger selection of trims and configurations, and a more appealing design inside and out. The Mach-E allows for longer driving times and more customizations to add your unique touch. The Mach-E is a winner in my book. Contact us today to learn more about the 2021 Ford Mach-E.
